There are differing opinions on hair typing and whether it should be done or not. I'm for hair typing but not for the usual reasons. There are a few popular typing systems, but perhaps the most well-known is Andre Walker's system. His is also probably the most controversial because of both his statements regarding type 4 and a perceived hierarchy.
For the record, I disagree with his comments concern type 4 hair. It's beautiful in its natural state and can be as strong as the care it receives. However, I disagree with the hierarchy accusations. Type 1 is described as straight. If you look at straight hair, it resembles the number 1. Type 2 wavies...your curls sort of look like a numeric 2. Type 3 reminds me of a loopy 3. Type 4 is usually full of bends and angles like a 4. I don't believe that any type is "better" than another. It's all beautiful in its uniqueness.
